The groundskeeper keeps a crate by the Manor gate for nights like this one. Inside is everything you need to turn an ordinary front garden into the house the trick-or-treaters talk about all week. There's a spooky figure to hang from the porch, a hairy spider lurking by the door, a skeleton arm clawing its way out of the lawn and a gravestone standing guard among the flowerbeds.

Stretch the cobweb wool across windows, railings and hedges. Wrap the gate in warning tape and press bloody handprints onto the glass to finish. One crate, one evening, and the whole street will know which house is haunted.
